主流科學認為神靈感應只是未解的自然現象，即使超心理學（parapsychology）也用超感官知覺（extrasensory perception, ESP）與念力（psychokinesis, PK）這一對範疇來建構心靈現象的最簡解釋（使用最少假定）。研究顯示，超常感應（psi-effects）可來自自己的意向（intention），而非信眾所歸因的宗教神靈，不能上綱作為整套神話系統的見證；而負面感應（psi-missing effects）亦非神罰，而是「反意向感應」（psi-effects with intention-opposing direction）（Ertel, 2004, p. 122）。
